Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen! This clean and friendly capital of the world's oldest kingdom bursts with life and culture. In the heart of the city is Tivoli Gardens, with its funfair, lovely gardens and incredible firework displays. A stylish city offering a wealth of things to see and do, and protected by the Little Mermaid gazing out to sea...come and see why!
Watch the changing of the guards at Amalienborg Palace, visit the Christianborg Castle (home of the Danish Parliament) and Rosenborg Castle, with its treasury of crown jewels. Tivoli Gardens (open mid Apr-mid Sep) in the heart of the city is an excellent venue for restaurants, concerts and lively amusements. The city also boasts great shopping, and a wide range of art galleries and museums, including the Danish Design Centre.
A canal trip enables you to take in all of the main sights including the Little Mermaid, and is a good introduction to Copenhagen. Stroll along Strøget, Europe's longest shopping street, and pick up some locally produced porcelain, pewterglass and silver. Copenhagen is compact but you can cheaply hire a bicycle for the day (with a DKK20 deposit) from stands around the city. For a different side of Scandinavia, cross the impressive engineering feat that is the Öresund bridge and visit Malmö in Sweden for a day trip. Malmö has beautiful parks, great shopping and lovely restaurants. Return train ticket for approx 45 minutes journey DKK130. The Copenhagen Card offers free admission to numerous museums and free local public transport. Valid for 24 or 72 hours, the card costs roughly DKK159-395 and is available at Copenhagen Airport and the Tourist Information Centre.
The revitalised Nyhavn harbour area is an ideal place to have a drink and watch the world go by. Copenhagen's many restaurants offer international and local cuisine - try the Smorrebrod (open sandwiches), local herring dishes and foaming lager. To finish the evening watch the fireworks in Tivoli Gardens on Wed, Fri and Sat (the Tivoli Gardens are open from mid Apr-mid Sep in the summer season and mid Nov-late Dec for Christmas markets). Entrance approx. DKK60.
