Must Do
  • After a days sightseeing pay a visit to one of the coffee houses, these are an integral part of Viennese life. There are hundreds but we have picked Café Central and Café Demel, as they are uniquely designed with extraordinary décor and welcoming ambience. The custom is to take your time and linger as long as you like.
  • Spend the afternoon at the Naschmarkt, a vibrant open air market extending for over 500m along Linke Wienzeile. Browse the stalls selling just about every food imaginable, or stay for a bite to eat on one of the street café’s or restaurants that are just perfect for lunch
  • Enjoy a fun day at Prater Park, home to the large amusement park known as the Volksprater or Wurstelprater. Take a ride on the giant Riesenrad (Ferris wheel), and enjoy the spectacular view of the city as it slowly rotates.
Food and Drink
Traditional Viennese food is generally rich, calorie-ridden and tasty! Specialities include Wiener schnitzel, Vienna’s best known dish, a cutlet (usually veal or pork) coated in breadcrumbs and fried. Goulash is also very popular, and is a beef stew with a rich sauce flavoured with paprika. Dumplings filled with bacon or apricots are an element of many meals and can be included in soups and desserts as well as main meals.
The most famous Austrian dessert is the strudel, baked dough filled with fruit, mainly apple, with a few raisins and cinnamon. If you have a really sweet tooth try the world famous Sachertorte, a delicious chocolate cake that is a real treat with a cup of speciality coffee.
Austria is well known for its fine beer. It is usually a light golden colour, although you can sometimes get dark versions too. Beer is traditionally served with a slice of lemon straddling the glass rim. Other well-known Austrian beverages include schnapps, which is often taken after a large meal to settle the stomach. Look out for some homemade schnapps in the markets around town.
Shopping
The main shopping areas of the city are the pedestrian-only thoroughfares of Karntner Strasse, Graben and Kohlmarkt. Mainly upmarket and specialist shops are to be found here.
Look out for the busy Mariahilferstrasse, where the Viennese traditionally do their shopping, home to many large department stores.
Pick up some bargains at the Naschmarkt - this is mainly food but there are some stalls selling clothes and interesting souvenirs.
