Planning your visit

  • Overview

Must See
  • Grand' Place This beautiful square is flanked by the ornate Town Hall and guild houses; at night it is illuminated by a spectacular light show.
  • Mannekin Pis Duquesnoy’s celebrated statue has been a tourist attraction for centuries.
  • Palais Royal This imposing palace is now the office of the King of Belgium and houses an interesting museum about the Belgian royal family.
  • Cathedral of St Michel and St Gudule This 13th century gothic cathedral stands on the site of an earlier 11th century church.
  • Atomium Built for the 1958 World Fair, nine shining steel spheres representing an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, stand 103m high as a space-age symbol of the city.
Must Do
  • Discover the Art Nouveau buildings sprinkled around the city, and be sure to visit the Horta Museum, the former home of architect Victor Horta.
  • Go browsing for antiques in the area around chic Sablon square.
  • Learn about the European Parliament with a free audio-guided tour of the debating chamber.
  • Enjoy the open air at Jubilee Park, one of the largest parks in Brussels covering 75 acres and laid out in formal symmetrical alleyways.
Food and Drink
Brussels is one of Europe’s gastronomic capitals and you’ll find far more on offer than just chocolates and beer. Mosselen-frites, or mussels and chips, features heavily on many menus, but also look out for rabbit cooked in beer, Flemish beef stew, sausages and waffles.
Shopping
The best souvenirs to take home from Brussels are chocolate, lace and tapestries, and there are weekly antique and flea markets. Opened in 1847, the Galeries Royales St Hubert house elegant specialist shops beneath ornate glazed roofs.
Where to Stay
Those looking to take in the architectural heritage of the city will enjoy staying close to the Grand’ Place. Alternatively, those who enjoy quiet evenings may prefer hotels in the European Quarter, close to Leopold Park.
Insider Tip
Visit Tintin and Snowy at the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, where you can enjoy themed exhibitions from the library of more than 25,000 comic books.
