- Charles Bridge Following the procession route of Bohemian kings, this focal point of Prague is vibrant day or night, bustling with entertainers, locals and tourists. Lined with statues, it is said that if you rub one in particular you will return to Prague.
- Prague Castle Possibly the largest ancient castle complex in the world, it is dominated by the huge Gothic façade of St Vitus Cathedral, famous for its stained glass. Containing churches, monasteries, museums and art galleries, it is Prague’s cultural centre, and the impressive Castle Gardens are not to be missed.
- Old Town Square Studded with Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque architecture, it is surrounded by a maze of narrow streets filled with jewellery shops and cafes.
- Wenceslas Square The Czech Champs- Elysees, Prague’s busiest shopping plaza is also dominated at the top end by the National Museum.
- National Museum A bastion of Czech history and prehistory all under one roof.
- The Old Town Hall Attracting all the attention, the famous Astronomical Clock comes alive every hour when figures of Christ and the 12 apostles emerge and the skeleton of Death tolls a bell.
- Jewish Quarter Although containing some of Prague’s most impressive art nouveau buildings and designer shops, this is also a spot for quiet reflection amongst the five synagogues and the Jewish cemetery’s jumble of gravestones.
- Stroll around Mala Strana on the left bank of the Vltava River and just below the castle complex. With its Baroque buildings, cobbled streets, embassies and exclusive hotels, this is an atmospheric and serene area of the city.
- Spend happy days on the trail of Franz Kafka, Prague’s favourite author. Tracing his old haunts is not just for literary fans, it is a great excuse to explore the cobbled streets of the Old Town. Find picturesque Golden Lane for his former house.
- Climb Petrin Hill by foot, or by its funicular railway. This 318m hill with eight parks is accessed from the Mala Strana district and topped by a 62m version of the Eiffel Tower where you are rewarded with fabulous city views.
- If you have the time, try to leave Prague and experience the charms of South and West Bohemia. Day tours can be arranged to the spa town of Karlovy Vary, famous for its hot springs and spa treatments and as the location for the recent film ‘Casino Royale’. Further south is Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for the fine architecture in the historic Old Town.
Eating out is a relatively cheap and easy affair with an endless array of candlelit restaurants and lively bars. Local dishes are predominantly meat-based, accompanied by dumplings, potatoes or sauerkraut, and are dressed in rich sauces. Other specialities include Prague ham served with whipped cream and horseradish, and renowned Czech game dishes. Make sure you sample Czech beer too, it’s excellent.
Shopping
Wenceslas Square is a bustling thoroughfare with an affluence of modern stores that are both fashionable and chic. If you wander along the historic streets from the Powder Tower to the castle you’ll find all manner of interesting wares. There are countless shops selling Bohemian crystal and glassware, and Czech garnet and amber jewellery are also some of the best buys in Prague.
Things to Do
- TWO TOWERS ARTS TOUR - This private walking tour is fully guided by a local expert and includes entrance fees to two of Prague’s many towers. Designed to give you two unique perspectives of the Old Town, from street level and from high with spectacular views over the rooftops. Finally you will visit the Manto Gallery, a Baroque house showing the work of a prominent Czech artist who works with glass and iron. You have the opportunity to design your own individual piece of glasswork which is then fired and delivered to your hotel the following day.
- GRAND CITY TOUR - During the minibus tour you will visit the historical areas of the city, passing the National Museum, National Theatre, Charles Bridge and Castle District. Prague Castle will be visited on foot (approx. 1hr 30mins). The tour culminates with a short visit to Old Town Square and ends at Wenceslas Square.
- CRUISE ON VLTAVA RIVER - You will be collected from your hotel and taken to board your fully air-conditioned boat on the Vltava River for a sightseeing cruise through Prague. You will see the panorama of Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge, the National Theatre and much more.
- KARLOVY VARY - Take a trip through the picturesque West Bohemian countryside to Karlovy Vary. This world-famous spa town has been known for its medicinal mineral springs and you get the chance to taste them. At Karlovy Vary you will also enjoy strolling through the many colonnades shopping for porcelain, the locally made glass and Bohemian crystal and, of course, the famous Czech liqueur, Becherovka, produced from an age-old secret recipe of herbs.
- CESKY KRUMLOV - Visit this attractive UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Bohemia for one night as part of your Prague break. Situated on a horseshoe bend in the Vltava River, this medieval city is renowned for its fabulous Gothic castle dating back to the 13th-century. Package includes private transfers from Prague, 3hr walking tour of the city and castle with private guide, plus one night in the 5-star Hotel Ruze which overlooks the river.
When visiting Prague Castle, take tram 22 or 23 up the steep hill and leave the steps for the way down.
