Planning your visit
- Overview
- Alexander Nevsky Cathedral This oniondomed, Russian Orthodox church was named after the Russian hero who defeated the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century.
- Kadriorg Park A beautiful 250-acre park with a palace in the centre and a swan lake.
- Toompea Castle An ancient 10th-century Estonian stronghold stood on a 170-foot-high limestone plateau overlooking the city.
- The Old Town This jumble of 14th - and 15th century architecture with its medieval walls and cobblestone streets is the site of many of the city's historic attractions and museums.
- Climb to the top of the Town Hall Tower for fabulous views over the city. A visit to the Occupation Museum provides a fascinating insight into life under the Soviet occupation. Named European Museum of the year for 2008, the KUMU Art Museum is unmissable.
Dine in the Old Town’s traditional restaurants and sample the smoked fish, especially trout (suitsukala), which is an Estonian speciality along with the famous sausages. Try the syrupy Vana Tallinn liqueur which is sickly sweet, very strong and an essential part of any Estonian table. It's best served in coffee, over ice, with milk or with champagne. Estonia's best beers are served in abundance, try the light Saku beer or the heavier Saare beer from the island of Saaremaa.
Shopping
A required stop on any shopping tour of Tallinn is the outdoor market on Müürivahe street where craftswomen sell knitted products. Even more intriguing is the Katariina Passage, where medieval-style workshops are run by artists. Onlookers watch as glasswork, ceramics and leather goods are created right before their eyes.
Where to stay
Stay in the fabulous location of Tallinn’s main square next to the old cobbled streets of the Old Town.
Things to do
- Travel through the cobbled streets of the Old Town and take in the enchanting sites with a private guide.
At lunch time try the pcievaproad, or menu of the day, for a good value, hearty meal.
