Must See
Regional dishes such as cassoulet (a delicious stew of white beans, Toulouse sausage and duck confit), and along with bouillabaisse (fish soup) are served in many of the traditional restaurants. Taste the Corbières or Minervois wines, which are full bodied reds and are produced in the region.
Shopping
All kinds of souvenirs can be bought in the city, including original clothes in wool, art, tapestries and homemade chocolates. These can be found in the cobbled, winding streets.
Where To Stay
All hotels boast excellent views but for a truly memorable break stay at one of the hotels within the historic walled Cité which are sensational when illuminated at night.
Things To Do
On 14th July each year the famous Cité is set ablaze with a historical re-enactment, concerts, illuminations, parades, artillery gun salutes, a torchlight march and a high firework display to mark Bastille Day.
- Be sure to see Le Château Comtal. The only way to get onto the inner ramparts is to visit the castle, which is said to be the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
- Place Marcou is lined with cafés, all of which have tables laid out under the trees, which has spectacular views over the Pyrenean mountains.
- Walk to Le Pont Vieux, the famous bridge over the River Aude that links La Cité with La Ville Basse. It is nothing special in itself, but its view to the citadel, after dark when it’s illuminated, is sensational.
