  • Both Chamonix and Talloires offer a vast choice of gastronomic delights from high-class restaurants to rustic mountain refuges. Local specialities include cheese fondue, raclette and pierrade based on fresh local produce. A must try is the infamous tartiflette, served with potatoes, Reblochon cheese, onions and bacon served with a glass of Gamay.
Shopping
Mountain arts and crafts, woodcarvings and leather goods are found in many of the hilltop shops. There is an abundance of shops in Chamonix selling outdoor clothing and boots at fantastic prices in the summer season.

  • Chamonix - Undeniably one of the greatest mountain resorts in the world. Whether you choose to relax and admire the scenery or relish the challenge to try out the array of activities, from gentle hikes to white water rafting, the choice is yours. The bustling town plays host to an abundance of lively bars and restaurants, cafes and shops. Superb biking and hiking opportunities include gentle paths on the valley floor, to steep climbs and descents. There is also a superb adventure park, sports centre and an 18-hole golf course. The awe-inspiring glaciers radiating from Mont Blanc provide a magnificent backdrop to this lively Savoyarde town. Chamonix is a perfect mountain resort.
  • Talloires – The enchanting village of Talloires, is packed with picturesque old houses and restaurants with an exceptional location, nestled against a steep mountain backdrop on the eastern shore of Lake Annecy. With a lakeside position and natural beaches, Talloires is also an ideal venue for boating, watersports and golf (see details of the free Talloires en Liberte Card for free activities). Explore the beautiful nature reserve of the Roc de Chère, the impressive waterfall at Angon or the lovely village of Menthon with its fairytale castle. The lake and surrounding area is a popular summer playground.

  • Chamonix - Make time to take a trip up the spectacular Aiguille du Midi on one of Europe’s highest cable cars, or ride on the famous rack railway to 6,200ft to admire the stunning ‘Mer de Glace’. There is also an unbeatable range of outdoor activities such as walking and hiking with English guides, glacier hikes, rafting and canoeing on the River Arve and guided mountain bike rides. Cultural and sporting events take place all year, including the Mont Blanc marathon in June, International Climbing Festival in July and Fête des Guides in August.

Insider Tip
Visit the tourist board offices to pick up maps of all the local trails for you to explore and discover. July 14th is celebrated with fireworks and dancing and the Fete du Lac is held on the first Saturday in August.
Celebration
Take a trip to the Venice of the Alps, Annecy and relax on one of the cafe terraces and watch the sunset over the lake.
If staying in Chamonix, take a trip on the Aiguille du Midi Cable car up to a mountain restaurant, and take in the spectacular Mont Blanc views.
