Planning your visit

  • Overview

Must See
  • Palais des Beaux-Arts This beautifully restored 19th-century palace museum is second only to the Louvre and contains works of Monet and Goya
  • Ancienne Bourse This beautiful ornate building dominates the Grand’ Place where its courtyard hosts an afternoon flea market.
Must Do
  • Relax with a bière on the café terraces in the Grand’ Place, after wandering around the cobbled streets of the old town and exploring the cultural sights of Lille.
  • Visit Le Braderie, held on the first weekend of September, where you can rummage through bric-a-brac and find an antique treasure to take home.
  • Book your trip for December and enjoy the delights of the Christmas Market – the largest in Northern France.
Food and Drink
The regional dishes of Northern France combine influences from both French and Belgian cuisine. The area is justifiably proud of its numerous brasseries serving regional specialities. Dishes to sample include carbonnade de boeuf and waterzooï, a Flemish stew made with chicken or fish in a creamy sauce. You’ll also find mountains of mussels with enormous mounds of frites.
Desserts include tarte au sucre, brioche-like cramiques and almond macaroons. The drink of choice is beer and it’s often used in cooking – you might even find beer soup on the menu!
Shopping
There is plenty here for the discerning shopper. On the rue de la Grande Chaussée, you’ll find French designer names such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Lacoste. For something more unique, try the tiny boutiques in the old Flemish houses of the old town; you might find antiques, jewellery or fashion. At Euralille Mall, near the Eurostar terminal, there are more than 100 highstreet brands to browse through.
Where To Stay
The Grand' Place is conveniently located as Lille’s main square, where the beautifully restored Opera stands amongst a wide variety of café terraces, bars and restaurants.
Things To Do
  • On Sunday mornings, visit the bustling, cosmopolitan Wazemmes Market for food, flowers and clothing. Or sample cream-filled waffles, enjoyed by de Gaulle, at the historic Pâtisserie Meert on the rue Esquermoise.
  • LILLE CITY PASS Discover the beauty of Lille with a guided bus tour, free access to 27 museums/cultural sites and free transportation, valid for 1 day or 2 days.
Insider Tip
Spoil yourself at the Michelin-starred restaurant L’Haîtrière for an evening of gourmet seafood in opulent surroundings. Located close to the cathedral, it’s a popular restaurant so you will have to book.
