  • Explore the historic Latin Quarter, browsing for second-hand books at the bouquiniste stalls along the river bank.
  • Meander the myriad streets of Montmartre, ride the old-fashioned carousel below Sacré Coeur, and sit for a portrait in the bustling Place du Tertre.
  • Enjoy the impressive views of the Eiffel Tower from the Trocadéro before crossing the river to wander through the expansive Champ de Mars gardens.
  • Soak up the chic atmosphere in the village-like centre of St Germain des Prés.
Food and Drink
Café culture is a Parisian way of life, from very simple places where you can rub shoulders with locals, to expensive terraces in prime tourist locations. Arguably the most famous cafes in Paris are Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, both in St Germain des Prés and both historical meeting points for writers and intellectuals. Today they offer the perfect vantage point to watch the world go by.
France is famous for its cuisine and Paris offers no shortage of dining options, whether it’s a croque monsieur at a café or a gourmet meal in a Michelin-starred restaurant. The Atelier de Joel Robuchon in St Germain is an excellent choice for high-quality food served in an informal setting, whilst the Terminus Nord opposite the Gare du Nord is a typical Parisian brasserie with a fabulous blend of Art Deco and Art Nouveau decor. For a taste of the French Maghreb, the intimate 404 restaurant in the Marais district serves delicious Moroccan and Tunisian cuisine in a fabulous Berber-inspired room.
Shopping
The large department stores Printemps and Galeries Lafayette offer immense choice and are housed in a series of buildings close to the Opéra Garnier. Le Bon Marché on the Left Bank, designed by Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1852, is well worth a visit. For those looking for the latest fashions, designer shops can be found along rue du Faubourg St Honoré, boulevard St Germain and avenue Montaigne. The Marais offers an appealing mix of chic interior design, trendy boutiques and original jewellery, while St Germain is renowned for its antique shops. For those who enjoy street markets, head to rue Mouffetard close to the Latin Quarter for cheese, fruit, vegetables and meat, whilst the large weekend flea market at Clignancourt might tempt those looking to track down a vintage piece.
Where To Stay
To make your choice of hotel easier, we have divided our presentation of hotels into five different areas of the city, each with different atmospheres and attractions. We have included the name of the nearest Métro station so that you can plan your days out.
Champs-Elysées/Trocadéro
Lined by trees, the Champs-Elysées runs between the monumental Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde with its 3000-year-old Egyptian obelisk. From the Arc de Triomphe the leafy 16th arrondissement leads down to the Trocadéro from where you can enjoy fabulous views of the Eiffel Tower.
Louvre/Opéra
The historic and prestigious heart of Paris is the location of the Louvre Museum and the Tuileries gardens. The large department stores Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, close to the gilded Opéra Garnier, draw those looking for excellent shopping.
République/Bastille/Gare du Nord
This bustling area around the Gare du Nord is popular with Eurostar travellers. Equally busy is the large Place de la République. Bastille, formerly the site of the infamous prison, and the neighbouring Marais are bohemian in character.
Montmartre
The hilliest area of Paris with its myriad streets is crowned by the Sacré Coeur, from where you can enjoy views across the Paris rooftops.
Left Bank
Famous for its chic café society, St Germain des Prés is an exclusive neighbourhood, while the neighbouring Latin Quarter has an intellectual legacy with the famous Sorbonne. Elsewhere the Left Bank is home to the iconic Eiffel Tower and busy Montparnasse.
