- Overview
- Northern Lights One of nature’s most incredible sights appears when solar wind particles collide with air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere, transferring their energy into light. Displays can vary in intensity, from a glowing curtain of greenish light dancing in the distance to a spectacular, multi-coloured fusion stretching across the sky.
- Hallgrimskirkja Church The tallest and most striking church in Iceland.
- The Pearl Used for heating the city. Just under the dome is one of Reykjavik’s best-known restaurants. Step outside on a clear day and enjoy the 360-degree view of the city and the wonderful surroundings.
- Thjodminjasafn The national museum of Iceland. The exhibits describe anything you would possibly want to know about the history of this fabulous city.
- Take a whale-watching and puffin cruise on Reykjavik’s beautiful bay. Watch out for these magnificent giant mammals and the comic, colourful birds.
- Spend a leisurely afternoon at the Blue Lagoon, the milky–turquoise blue water spreads over a huge area, surrounded by dark lava hills.
- Take a stroll along the banks of Tjornin (City Pond). Admire the excellent views of the city to the east, while a shooting fountain casts a rainbow over the scene on sunny days. Watch out for the waterfowl as they linger on the shore hoping for titbits!
Iceland is justly proud of its local food. Fish is often found as salt cod (the dried then reconstituted chunk of fish that is found in many regional dishes). The lamb is delicious and is found in the traditionally hearty meat and vegetable soup that is common at lunchtime. Seabirds are fairly common on the menu, with puffin being the most prevalent. Often served smoked, the taste can be compared to veal.
More fun, however, are the weird uniquely Icelandic dishes sold mostly at speciality restaurants. Hakarl is fermented shark meat, served in tiny chunks. It is usually served with generous portions of brennivin, a powerful taste-numbing spirit distilled from potatoes and flavoured with caraway seeds or angelica.
Shopping
The city centre of Reykjavik is full of delightful boutiques, craft shops, fine fashion venues and souvenir stalls.
Lagavegur is the prime shopping area of the city. More exclusive shops are close to the heart of the city and the slightly downmarket funky shops are further away from the centre. Much of the focus is on clothing with many exotic designs, Icelandic one-off creations and quirky items available.
Side lanes branch off from the main street here you can find many exclusive jewellery shops and fine art galleries.
