Food and Drink
Traditional Ligurian food is considered as some of the most refined in the whole of Italy. Tagliatelle is served in various forms, but most notably with the basil-based sauce, pesto, which originates from here, or the local trofie, little floury potato shapes, and green beans. The delicious torta di verdura, a pie made from vegetables and wild herbs, is another Ligurian speciality. As you might expect, the local fish is excellent; try the orata (sea bream), served with olives and potatoes in the many excellent fish restaurants found in the coastal resorts.
The mild climate of Liguria is ideal for growing vegetables and fruit such as tomatoes, artichokes, peaches, apricots and lemons, so expect to see some wonderful displays at local shops and markets. Vines are also grown throughout the region, and Pigato and Vermentino are the most notable Ligurian white wines, the Rossese di Dolceacqua is Liguria's best red, whilst Sciacchetrà is the sweet dessert wine still produced in the Cinque Terre from partially dried grapes. The classic Italian aperitifs of Cinzano and Martini produced in nearby Turin are also commonplace here.
Shopping
The colourful market held twice weekly in San Remo is still held in high esteem by the people living along this stretch of coastline, whilst Portofino is home to the chic boutiques of Gucci, Prada and Chanel. For a traditional souvenir, why not try the extra virgin olive oil, rivalled only to that produced in Tuscany, or the interesting pasta shapes that can be found in the local delicatessens and supermarkets.
Where To Stay
  • Portofino - One of the most exclusive and sought after resorts in Italy, Portofino is a picture postcard setting. Once a tiny fishing village, Portofino’s harbour is now filled with expensive and glamorous boats and yachts, and has an exclusive atmosphere that has attracted the likes of film stars and celebrities for many years.
  • Santa Margherita - A little and relatively undeveloped resort with its beautiful views of the Ligurian Sea, and mesmerising coastal walks, Santa Margherita is a real gem. Principle sights in town include the Genoan castle, built in 1550, and the lovely Basilica of St. Margaret of Antioch, but it's the town's other charms, notably its elegant piazza and wonderful harbour side restaurants, you'll be most drawn to.
  • Rapallo - Included in the Portofino Natural Park, just a short way along this beautiful stretch of coastline, Rapallo is a pretty town with a harbour, long promenade and beautiful villas built into the hills behind the resort.
  • San Remo - Long established as a holiday resort of the Italian Riviera, the first grand hotels were built here at turn of the 19th century. San Remo offers a glimpse of old-style Riviera glamour. By night, the grand Liberty-style casino plays host to a series of concerts and events, held in the casino’s Opera theatre; whilst the real casinos and glamour of Monte Carlo, are just a short hop over the nearby French border. Enjoying a favourable climate even during the winter months, due to its proximity to the Mediterranean, and the presence of alps at the back of the town, San Remo is perfect for a break all year round.
  • Alassio - Situated along the Rivera Delle Palme, Alassio is possibly the most famous resort on the Italian Riviera, known for its long sandy beach and charming old town with its pretty piazzas. Especially popular during summer months when locals and visitors flock to the long sandy beach here.
Things To Do
  • Discover the Cinque Terre, the five charming fishing villages along the rugged coastline to the west of La Spezia. Now a world heritage site, part of the charm is the lack of modernisation; the villages remain secluded from the outside world, being accessible only by boat from La Spezia. A walking trail connects the five villages, each having its own character, making this area a must-see!
  • Spend a day exploring the highlights of the Ligurian coast and visit Portofino and the city of Genoa.
  • Monaco and Monte Carlo, just across the border, discover the glamour of this small principality. Passport required to enter the casino.
Insider Tip
If you are visiting Portofino, the best way is to go by boat, to enjoy panoramic views of the resort from the water.Celebration
Enjoy a candlelit meal or romantic drink in the special atmosphere in the tiny harbour at Portofino.
