Must See
Lucca is known throughout Italy and beyond as a producer of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, so buy a bottle to take home with you. For a light lunch, order crostini with a variety of toppings. For something more substantial, meat-eaters will love the giant Florentine steaks, usually shared between two people, or a plate of arrosto misto, mixed roast meats. Also look out for fresh ribbon pasta with hare or wild boar based sauces.
The local wines of Tuscany, of course, are not to be missed; finish off with a glass of vin santo dessert wine and some cantucci biscuits.
Shopping
Visit the Via Fillungo, Lucca's main shopping street whose many shops are decorated with art nouveau details. As well as olive oil, you'll find all things relating to Puccini in the shops of Lucca. Other good buys include locally-made ceramics and carved marble and alabaster. Lucca is also famed for silk manufacture and embroidery, so household linens are worth looking out for.
Where To Stay
We recommend staying within the historic medieval walls of Lucca with all the sights of this charming city within close proximity.
Things To Do
Make sure you have enough time to visit the nearby Versilia coast. The pretty seaside resort of Viareggio is particularly worth a visit for its elegant Liberty-style villas and long promenade.
- San Martino This elegant black and white cathedral with its square bell tower is an outstanding example of Pisan-Romanesque architecture.
- Casa de Puccini The great composer was born in this house, now a museum that includes his piano and costume designs for his operas.
- Find some shade on the tree-lined rampart walk; these are the best-preserved Renaissance defences in Europe.
- Visit Torre del Lago, Puccini's lakeside home, where in summer the famous opera festival is held in the open-air theatre.
- Enjoy an ice cream in the Piazza del Mercato, an oval piazza that follows the shape of the original Roman amphitheatre.
