  • Overview

This energetic city combines classical history with a charming character and vibrant culture. Overshadowed by Mount Vesuvius, it is not only a fitting base for visiting the ruins of Pompeii, but is also the self-proclaimed birthplace of the original pizza.

Getting around

It's easy to explore Naples by public transport. Buses, trains and boats run at regular intervals to the nearby town of Sorrento - ideal for a day trip.

Must sees

Set by the sea in the Campania region, Naples is perfectly placed for visits to the island of Capri, the resort of Sorrento, the dramatic Amalfi coastline and the excavations at Pompeii, and Mount Vesuvius is a definite must see. In Naples itself, pay a visit to the 17th-century Palazzo Reale (royal palace) and the two museums of the Castel Nuovo fortress. The Duomo (Naples'cathedral) is a must-visit for fans of Gothic architecture. Naples is also famed for the Teatro San Carlo, an opera house that's the oldest working theatre in Europe, and the collections at the excellent Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which include the most impressive artefacts from Pompeii.

Must buys

Hunt down a variety of delightful handmade souvenirs in the old craftsmen's shops around the Quartieri Spagnoli. As well as cameos and Capodimante porcelain, gouaches (small paintings of local scenes) are particularly desirable.

Must tries

Naples is renowned for its pizza, pasta and seafood, and there's a wide choice of restaurants to sample them in. You should also try some of the famous wines produced by the Campania region's vineyards.
