Planning your visit

  • Overview

Must See
  • The Colosseum You'll almost hear the roar of the crowd still echoing through the deep, dark recesses of this iconic building.
  • The Pantheon Designed by Hadrian, this stunning dome with its open roof has stood for nearly 2,000 years.
  • The Sistine Chapel Michelangelo’s masterpiece is the crowning glory of the Vatican Museums.
  • The Forum and Palatine Tread in the footsteps of Julius Caesar, amongst other Roman emperors, as you explore the ancient city. The Capitoline Museums The oldest museum collection in the world, including Rome’s finest classical sculptures.
Must Do
  • Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain – then you're guaranteed to make a return visit to the Eternal City.
  • Climb to the top of the dome of the Basilica of St Peter's. The incredible interior designed by Michelangelo is followed by a spectacular view across the city.
  • Visit the authentic Campo Dei Fiori area, named after the colourful flower market that takes place in the square.
  • Relax with an aperitif at one of the elegant restaurants that line the Piazza Navona as you admire Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi.
Food and Drink
Italian food may have spanned the globe but there's far more on offer than just pizza and pasta. Roman cuisine is rich and varied, from traditional and earthy dishes originating in the meat markets, through the classic spaghetti alla carbonara, to more than one hundred different flavours of ice cream. Pecorino romano and ricotta are the city's favourite cheeses, while a platter of delicious antipasti will reflect whatever is in season at the local markets.
A bruschetta topped with tomatoes or artichoke makes a quick snack; for a real Roman experience, try visiting the authentic area of Trastevere, full of trattorias and pizzerias offering alfresco dining opportunities during the long summer evenings.
Local wines to try are include the crisp white Frascati, and the Est! Est! Est! wine, taking its name ('Here it is!') from the words written on a wine shop door by a medieval papal messenger sent to find the best one in town!
Shopping
In one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, the shopping will not disappoint. As to be expected, Italy's top designers are out in force, mostly around the Via Condotti at the bottom of the Spanish Steps – Prada, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, Versace and more – but part of the appeal of shopping in Rome is finding treasures to take home that are uniquely Roman and not available elsewhere.
Best buys include leather goods, in particular gloves in rainbow colours from tiny boutiques in hidden corners, ceramics and handicrafts, not to mention gorgeous, handmade stationery. Or try the Sunday morning flea market at the Porta Portese for something different.
Where to stay
The best way to discover Rome and its treasures is on foot. Our hotels are all centrally located: you might like to stay close to the Trevi Fountain and the Via Del Corso, ideally placed for sightseeing and shopping; in the more exclusive streets around the Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps; close to the impressive Piazza Repubblica; or perhaps right by the Colosseum and the most ancient part of Rome.
