Food and Drink
You will eat well in Umbria. Local cuisine tends to include simple and fresh ingredients, as well as more earthy and robust fare such as the funghi porcini, paparadelle with wild boar sauce, and the treasured truffles found in the region.
Shopping
Perugia is where the famous antiques market is held in the Giardini Carducci on the last Sunday of each month, attracting visitors from across Italy. Crafts following ancient traditions from the 13th century can be purchased in the town of Assisi.
Where To Stay
  • Perugia, the region’s capital, is known for the famous Jazz Festival that takes place here during the summer months. Choose to stay in Perugia itself or in one of the beautiful rural hotels located in the countryside close to the city.
  • Bettona offers the opportunity to experience the special atmosphere of one of Umbria’s medieval hill towns. Stay in Brufa, in the midst of the Umbrian countryside, whilst still being close to the sights of Perugia.
  • The medieval town of Assisi, famed as being the birthplace of St Francis, is home to the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco, whose hillside position ensures fabulous views across the Umbrian countryside.
  • The hill town of Orvieto, surrounded by vineyards and famed for the delicious white wine, Orvieto Classico, is also one of Italy’s greatest art cities. With its wonderful cathedral and interesting Etruscan history, Orvieto is well worth visiting.
Things To Do
  • Visit the collection of Umbrian paintings and sculptures in Umbria’s National Gallery in Perugia and relax afterwards in one of the cafés on Corso Vanucci. For some cool respite, visit the gardens of the Orto Botanico, a medieval monastic garden behind the St Pietro convent.
  • See the frescos of Giotto and the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. The Calendimaggio, a medieval costume festival takes place here on the first weekend in May, whilst the popular Festa di San Francesco takes place at the beginning of October.
  • Enjoy a day visiting some of the lesser-known, though equally beautiful places Umbria has to offer such as Todi, Gubbio known as the most perfect medieval town in Italy, and Spoleto, an outstandingly beautiful town.
  • Why not visit the shores of Lake Trasimeno for a cooling swim, and try a risotto al pesce di lago in one of the trattorias around the lake?
Insider Tip
Why not time your visit with one of the many festivals or concerts taking place in Umbria throughout the summer?
