Towering above the country's capital, the Citadel is an unmissable landmark in Amman, and
the Archaeological Museum is definitely worth a visit. The Roman Theatre, at the foot of the
Citadel, holds regular musical and dance performances during the summer.
To the north of Amman, the ancient city of Jerash is one of the largest and best preserved
Roman sites outside Italy. In the market town of Madaba, stop at the Greek Orthodox Church of
St George to see the Mosaic Map of the Holy Land, an intricate masterpiece dating from around
560AD. Nearby is Mount Nebo: one of the most revered holy sites in the country, it's said to be
the final resting place of Moses. Further south, visit the Crusader Castle at Karak, which
dominates the view for miles. Although all these attractions are fascinating, perhaps the most
incredible is the stunningly beautiful lost city of Petra. Carved into a cliff-face of pink
rock, the siq,Treasury, Monastery and High Place of Sacrifice are all must-sees. For a contrast
to this colourful city, explore the vast, tranquil desert scenery of Wadi Rum by 4x4 jeep.
Finally, a trip to Jordan would not be complete without relaxing by the Dead Sea - at 400
metres below sea level, it's the lowest point on earth.
Must buys
From modern shops and department stores to traditional markets and bazaars, Jordan offers every
shopping experience you can imagine. The souks of downtown Amman are particularly popular with
tourists. Here you'll find several gold and silver shops where prices are determined by weight.
Jewellery is less expensive than in the UK - but make sure you barter to get the best
price.
Must tries
Arabic cuisine is used to express hospitality and generosity, so traditional meals are a real
feast for the senses. A popular Bedouin speciality is Mensaf (a whole lamb, head included, on a
bed of rice and pine nuts). In the main cities and tourist resorts you'll find restaurants
serving Italian, French, Indian and Far Eastern cuisine.
