Oman's capital Muscat, the old port, is a fascinating place for sightseeing and has a wealth of historical sites. Encircled by ancient city walls, tour the streets of Old Muscat and view the Sultan's palace.The adjoining town of Muttrah is the city's main trading and residential port area. With an extensive coastline, Oman naturally has some outstanding beaches and the Batinah Coast in the north has a lot to offer. A well known area of healing, Rustaq has warm springs and wadis, and its mountains are pitted with caves hiding subterranean springs. Another beautiful north coast destination is Sohar, best visited for at least two or three days, offering attractions such as wadis with running water and public parks that are ideal for picnics.

A stroll around the souks is a must and shopkeepers sell an excellent variety of souvenirs, such as Frankincense, Omani silver crafts and Kashmiri head wear. Muscat's Old Muttrah Souk, a street market and historic village combined, is located along the corniche and features little cubicles offering exotic items.

International cuisine can be found across the country, from fast-food outlets to grand restaurants.Traditional Omani food is fairly simple, including marinated meat such as chicken, fish and mutton, and a popular drink is laban, a salty buttermilk. Alcohol is not widely available but is served in the hotel bars and restaurants.Visit a traditional teashop to drink tea and absorb the Arabian ambience. Sample pure Omani honey in Rustaq, where one of the main occupations is beekeeping.
