- Overview
- Swiss Transport Museum Located just outside Lucerne directly on the lake, Europe's largest most comprehensive Transport Museum.
- Church of St Leodegar Named after the city's patron saint, the towers are remnants of the structure originally built in 735 AD.
- The Lion of Lucerne This sculpture of a mortally wounded lion is arguably the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.
- Take the afternoon to have a leisurely stroll in Glacier Garden. Spend time in this Oasis of peace.
- Wander over the Kapellbruecke (Chapel Bridge) Inside the bridge is a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Lucerne’s history.
- Take the steamboat to Vitzanu, and then hop on the cogwheel train up to Mt Pilatus.
Local specialities to look out for are: Luzerner Kugelipastete, this heart-warming, stomach lining dish is a glorified vol-au-vent filled with a super-rich stew of diced veal and mushrooms in a cream sauce. Fish plucked fresh from the lake is another popular choice cooked in various different ways with many different herbs.
Wash it all down with a Kaffee fertig, a coffee laced with schnapps which is very easy to find in the Old Town cafes.
Shopping
The two major shopping districts are the Old Town and the recently developed Pilatusstrasse, a modern thoroughfare just outside the Central station.
