The most northerly capital in the world, Reykjavik is an invigorating and original choice. This city lies between the mountains and the sea. The name means 'Smoky Bay', after the steam clouds which rise from its geothermal springs. But it is Iceland's extraordinary landscape, easily accessible with our excursion programme, that makes for an unforgettable visit. Discover a land of fire and ice with active geysers and bubbling mud pools alongside thundering waterfalls. Swim in a steaming hot spring or go seal watching along the unspoilt coast. The Northern Lights make a breathtaking display, while the long, light summer days remind you that you are in the land of the midnight sun.
Iceland is an invigorating and original choice. The climate is surprisingly mild thanks to the Gulf Stream - summers are cool but winters are warmer than in New York or Vienna! Enjoy the view from the monumental Hallgrims Church. The manuscripts of the Sagas are housed in the Arnamagnaean Institute; the National Museum's collection of Viking artefacts is outstanding and the National Art Gallery has fine Icelandic paintings. The Northern Lights make a breathtaking display, while the long, light summer days remind you that you are in the land of the midnight sun.
Head for the shops for good buys of local products and take advantage of the tax free shopping at Kringlan shopping centre. Visit the Pearl with its observatory and Viking museum. If all that is too much, try a swim in one of the city's geothermal pools and a soak in the 'hot pots'. It is Iceland's extraordinary landscape, easily accessible with our excursion programme, that makes for an unforgettable visit. This is where you'll see the amazing crashing waterfalls, geysers and bubbling mud pools and have the time to relax in the Blue Lagoon.
In the evening unwind in one of the many stylish bars or enjoy dinner in one of the 80 restaurants on offer - the clean waters surrounding Iceland mean seafood is superb, and local specialities also include lamb and puffin!
