Charismatic Krakow is a lively university city with many fashionable cellar bars and hearty restaurants. Dominated by Wawel Hill and its castle, much of its medieval heart survived World War Two intact. Extending a warm welcome, this delightful Polish city is well worth discovering.
Begin your sightseeing in the Old Town with Rynek Glowny, the medieval market square at its centre. Krakow's strong Jewish heritage is evident in the Kazimierz district. Visit the castle and the former residence of Pope John Paul II. Climb Wawel Hill with its castle and cathedral and enjoy the view over the city. Shops are open 0900-1900 and best buys include silver & amber jewellery, leather and wooden goods.
Typical examples of Polish culinary specialities include bigos (sauerkraut, onion and sausage), pierogi (type of ravioli), zurek (soup) and sliwki (plums in chocolate).
