The city which gave Portugal its name is an ancient one, weathered by time and clinging haphazardly to the hillsides above the Douro river. Enjoy Oporto's maze of narrow alleyways, friendliness of its people and of course plenty of varieties of port wine.
Oporto's main attraction is the River Douro flanked by the Port wine cellars that made the city famous. Views of the huge Gustav Eiffel iron bridge are impressive. The Cathedral is a must.
We highly recommend a visit to any of the port wine cellars offering the opportunity to taste fine port wines. In good weather, take a trip down the Douro. For dinner, enjoy one of the small restaurants along the waterfront near the Eiffel Bridge.
Visit the Soares dos Reis Museum or the Serralves Museum of Modern Art. For shopping, head for the Via Catarina shopping mall. Shops close midweek at 1900, Sat at 1300 and all day Sun. On Sunday the flower market at Praca da Liberdade has ceramics, embroidery, filigree silver, leather and - port!
