After a days sightseeing pay a visit to one of the coffee houses, these are an integral part of Viennese life. There are hundreds but we have picked Café Central and Café Demel, as they are uniquely designed with extraordinary décor and welcoming ambience. The custom is to take your time and linger as long as you like.
Food & Drink
Traditional Viennese food is generally rich, calorie0ridden and tasty! Specialities include Wiener schnitzel, Vienna's best know dish, a cutlet (usually veal or pork) coasted in breadcrumbs and fried. Goulash is also very popular, a beef stew with a rich sauce flavoured with paprika. Dumplings filled with bacon or apricots are an element of many meals and can be included in soups and desserts as well as main meals.
Shopping
The main shopping areas of the city are the pedestrian-only thoroughfares of Karntner Strasse, Graben and Kohlmarkt. Mainly upmarket and specialist shops are to be found here.
Look out for the bust Mariahhilferstrasse, where the Viennese traditionally do their shopping, home to many large department stores.
Pick up some bargains at the Naschmarkt - this is mainly food but there are some stalls selling clothes and interesting souvenirs.
